The major urban renewal project in the heart of Redfern has been acknowledged for its excellence after taking several prestigious UDIA awards, including the coveted President’s Award.
The Pemulwuy project was delivered by Deicorp on behalf of Redfern’s Aboriginal Housing Company and is helping transform the old Eveleigh Street into a thriving new community.
Through innovative project delivery, Deicorp was able to create 62 affordable housing dwellings for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents, a world-class boxing gymnasium, Indigenous art gallery, 60-place childcare centre, retail and office space plus a magnificent 596 bed student accommodation building.
Over the past 12 months, Pemulwuy has one numerous design and development awards, including the Australian Good Design Award; The Urban Developer National Award for Development of the Year - Social Infrastructure; The Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Award for Urban Renewal; and most recently, The UDIA NSW Awards for Excellence in both Social and Affordable Infrastructure and Urban Renewal categories.
The UDIA President’s Award is chosen from all the category winners in the Awards for Excellence and is recognised as the highest award available. Pemulwuy secured this award at the President’s Lunch in August.
With great urban planning and meticulous design by @Nordon Jago and @Turner Studio, the Pemulwuy project is creating a lasting legacy for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Redfern.
Special thanks to the Deicorp team who worked for more than a decade to deliver this project, our partners @Scape and to Uncle Mick Mundine and the AHC for the vision to create a sustainable new beating heart for the Redfern community.
