Building a community doesn’t end once a building is complete. It’s about creating connectivity and supporting neighbourhood centres long after move-in day.
Buying a new apartment, whether off the plan or on completion, can be daunting, particularly in the wake of negative headlines generated by a handful of problematic buildings.
So it was a no-brainer for development and construction group Deicorp to be first in line for the government’s new risk-rating tool iCIRT.
“Serious developers recognise buyers want and need to have confidence that they’re dealing with capable and competent builders,” says Deicorp chairman Fouad Deiri. “I took the decision to submit our business as I recognised there is no better way to demonstrate our ability than by opening ourselves up to a rigorous and independent assessment.
“It’s pleasing that we have been recognised for leading the industry and receiving a rating that gives buyers confidence when purchasing a Deicorp apartment.”
Established 22 years ago with the construction of 30 residential units in Newtown, Deicorp has grown into one of Sydney’s most respected end-to-end developers, looking after design, development and delivery.
“Deicorp is an integrated builder and developer,” explains Deiri. “For purchasers, that means we take responsibility for every part of the process. From choosing the best sites for our projects, through to obtaining the development consent, from managing the design, finishes and fixtures, through to our expert construction of every apartment. We take care of marketing, sales and customer service and we do all of this ourselves. If there ever is a problem, we can resolve it. It’s never somebody else’s problem.”
Key to the company’s success is their focus on transport-connected developments. Over the past 10 years, the average distance of a Deicorp project from the nearest train station is 250 metres.
Deiri is proud of the company’s track record on connectivity across 40 Sydney suburbs, and he displays genuine enthusiasm for each project.
“As someone who started his career as a carpenter, I have a soft spot for every project Deicorp has delivered,” says Deiri. “Some of the projects that I feel have been significant for the business include South Village in Kirrawee and our Highline project in Westmead.”
A collection of 779 apartments with a beautiful public park and a major retail centre, South Village is a 300-metre walk from Kirrawee station.
“It’s a destination for the whole community who go there for their shopping, eating out and recreation,” says Deiri. “It has transformed the area and created a true village feel.”
At Highline, the 556 apartments are a great option for young families, couples, medical specialists and health workers.
“It would have to be the most connected and best located project in all of Sydney,” he says. “It’s on the doorstep of Westmead station, the new Westmead to Parramatta Light Rail and the upcoming Sydney West Metro Station. It’s across the road from Australia’s largest health and medical precinct and next to a major innovation quarter.”
For Deicorp, their interest in a community doesn’t end once a building is complete and the residents have moved in. The company has a strong tradition of supporting sports clubs and neighbourhood centres.
A recent example is their sponsorship of a homework and tutoring program for disadvantaged students in Sydney’s Northwest.
“Many of these students were falling behind in the classroom and our funding helped the local neighbourhood centre employ specialist tutors to help them catch up,” says Deiri. “The program gave these kids the confidence and skills to engage in the classroom. Kids who have received tutoring help through the program are catching up and look forward to going to school again.”
Deicorp currently has more than 3000 apartments under construction from Rockdale to Ashfield, Petersham, Redfern, Castle Hill and Tallawong.
Deiri believes the company’s ongoing success comes down to having a highly experienced team that creates a quality product.
“I’ve been lucky that since my first project, Deicorp has had some of the most experienced and talented professionals in the building industry working here,” says Deiri.
“This has enabled us to grow into one of Sydney’s most successful builder developers.”
